Personal information

Dr. Alessandro Chiarotto works as a senior researcher at the at the Department of Health Sciences, VU University, Amsterdam, and at the Department of General Practice, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam.

He has a background in physiotherapy (BSc, University of Padua, Italy) and clinical epidemiology (MSc "cum laude", VU University Amsterdam, NL). In 2018, he pursued his PhD on Musculoskeletal Health at the VU University Amsterdam with a thesis entitled "A core outcome measurement set for low back pain". During the PhD, he coordinated an international group of researchers, clinicians and patient consumers to develop a core outcome measurement set for clinical trials in patients with low back pain.

Dr. Chiarotto's research currently focuses on: 1) clinical research on diagnosis, prognosis and management of patients with musculoskeletal disorders, mainly spinal pain; 2) methodological research on evaluation and interpretation of patient-reported outcome measures. He has more than 40 articles published in international peer-reviewed scientific journals (Google Scholar H-index: 21), including high-ranking journals like: British Medical Journal, Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, PAIN, Journal of Pain, Journal of Physiotherapy, and Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

He is now daily supervisor of multiple PhD students and one post-doctoral researcher. Two years and half after the end of his PhD, he has acquired > 500.000€ in research funding, approximately half as principal investigator. He holds the Italian habilitation for Associate Professor in the competitive sector 06/N1 for rehabilitation sciences (scientific sector MED/48).
