Behind the scenes, a study of police investigators creation of crime scenario’s‘
To solve a crime a chronological description of what went on, when, how, why and by who must be given; a crime scenario. As to avoid the risk of wrongful conviction due to tunnel vision in an investigation, Dutch investigators are obliged to create multiple scenarios and rule but one out. Although this obligatory task is now conducted in serious crime investigations, little is known about how the construct a scenario let alone multiple ones based on the same pieces of evidence. This paper will present our study on the creation of multiple scenario and the influence of investigative experience.
