Challenging Contexts in Conversation

  • Louise J. Lawrence (Speaker)

Activity: Lecture / PresentationAcademic

Description

This conversation is inspired in part by our respective contributions in Lawrence, Smit, Strommen and van der Walt (eds.), Challenging Contextuality: Bibles and Biblical Scholarship in Context (OUP, 2024). We consider ways in which New Testament Studies (NTS) can sustain a core identity while engaging diverse methods, global perspectives, and contemporary concerns such as decolonization, justice, social transformation, and digitalization. We also reflect on the contexts in which biblical interpretations take place: our own positionality and locations, also interdisciplinary and institutional settings in which we work, emerging technologies, and the challenges these can pose for the discipline. With our contribution, we hope to make room for conversations about the presence and prospects of NTS.
