Invited lecture: Lawyers provide expert opinions and bring cases before the courts, NGOs scandalise prevailing policies, migrants do not want to be treated as second-class citizens - human rights play a role in a variety of ways in conflicts in which migration and its consequences are disputed. Under what social conditions is it possible to challenge the exclusion of migrants by invoking human rights, and how did they come about? What role does the law play in this transformation? These are the questions posed by the researchers of the MeDiMi project, which investigates the ‘humanrightization’ of law, politics and everyday life in migration societies, combining methods from legal, social and cultural studies. Janna Wessels reports from the research group's workshop and presents initial thoughts on a practical theory of human rights in the context of migration for discussion.
