Gustav Lange and the role of design philosophy and composition at Mauerpark Berlin
Gustav Lange (1937–2022) was one of the leading German landscape
architects in the 1990s. Mauerpark Berlin (GER) on the former Death
Strip of the Berlin Wall was his biggest and most significant work. This
study creates a critical assessment of the finalized park. It correlates
Lange’s personal philosophy with an analysis of the design composition.
Across all scales, Lange integrates three key concepts—dialogue of
culture and nature, inclusion and legibility of historic layers, and
engagement of interstitial spaces and coincidence. Concerning the design
composition on the larger scale, Lange employs an axially oriented
organization around primary geometric shapes resulting in a stabilising
design vocabulary. On the smaller, site scale, geometries and lines break
up and increase the perception of dynamics. Mauerpark exhibits Lange’s
dialectic comprehension between a multifaceted spatial framework and
the base of an ethical, personal philosophy.
