The spatial design of domestic agrarian colonies: a literature review.
The Colonies of Benevolence were founded in the Kingdom of the
Netherlands during the early 19th century to solve social challenges
related to poverty and became an influential prototype for other domestic
colonies. These UNESCO cultural landscapes will require informed design
solutions for contemporary challenges based on a deeper understanding
of the spatial design principles which supported their original social
ideals. Therefore, a cross-disciplinary literature review was conducted on
domestic colonies using a landscape and urban design lens. We found
that the main design principle reported with the social ideals is the
‘choice of location’ with minor results for ‘boundaries’, ‘visual
relationships’ and ‘orientation of buildings’. Moreover, little is known
about several aspects of the spatial design, such as path form, nodes,
scale and proportion. This study therefore highlights the need for new
knowledge about the spatial design principles embedded in these cultural
landscapes to navigate preservation and design development.
