As tech companies move to nuclear power to secure energy for AI, the materiality of digital technology and its environmental costs are becoming more and more evident to the public. On Monday, October 21, we held - as part of the Co-Creation For Inclusive Knowledges Lab - a workshop that brought together citizen activists, NGOs, and academics for a conversation on how to bridge local critique against data centres with broader concerns about datafication and the privatization of our communication infrastructures. We discussed public alternatives to private infrastructure and how to help them grow: a goal that is especially relevant in a world in which a few corporate tech executives increasingly translate their economic success into political power.
