Description

The development and use of representations have been a focal point for the field of technology and organizing almost since its emergence. However, two different literature streams have developed to a large extent apart from each other: one stream has advanced theory on how representations are developed by focusing on the design of information systems or how users feed those systems with data; another stream has focused on how representations are used to enable communication, coordination and collaboration in the workplace. In this symposium, we aim to bridge these two streams of research by and bring together scholars who are interested in how representations are constructed and used in practice. Following a performative perspective, the four studies presented will investigate how representations are constructed in various work settings, and how these representational practices become consequential for work and organizing.
