"The future of living in smart cities: privacy in the smart home at the crossroads of psychology and law"

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventWorkshopSocietal

Description

The workshop brought together in one room experts and societal stakeholders from different fields and sectors, to talk about important questions and potential solutions in relation to data/privacy risks and protection for smart home users.

The workshop took place on October 7th, from 11.00 to 17.30, at the campus of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. During the workshop we introduced our research project, and discussed all together the issues concerning domestic IoT, the privacy of the users and the chilling effect. The discussion included the gap between the users' ideal domestic life and the current and near-future reality, and what are possibly effective and beneficial ways to protect consumer privacy, through empowering users, improving the law or improving the technology, or a combination of those. We made an inventory of what main problems, implications, and advantages we can encounter in each field/from each perspective, all concerning smart home, IoT and privacy.
