Language is at the heart of the current revolution in generative AI. But is not well understood how Large Language Models like ChatGPT, through simply internalizing statistical patterns of human language, develop emergent cognitive abilities that surprise even their designers. In the talk, I argue that this remarkable capacity of language to unlock diverse AI capabilities resonates with theological intuitions that language (logos) possesses generative and structuring power. Not only does language shape how we understand reality, construct knowledge, or interact with each other, but it is spiritually charged and perhaps even foundational to rationality and the structure of reality. Recognizing this helps illuminate why the accelerating automation of language poses serious ethical and spiritual challenges, and how theological perspectives can enrich the debates around AI.
