Interview on new frontier of surveillance powered by AI

Description

The smart home, Emotion recognition, and spatial computing are three examples of AI-powered technologies that enable new occasions for state surveillance. In this interview I offer a brief description of Emotion recognition, the Smart Home and (a bit less) spatial computing, and single out the socio-technical features that make these technologies relevant from a surveillance perspective. I conclude with a few remarks on the role of the fundamental rights impact assessment, the "colander" effect of the exemptions to the prohibitions contained in art. 5 of the AI Act, and on how the case-law of the ECtHR and CJEU offers protection only up to a point.
