Description
The Netherlands has significant issues with organized crime connected to the illegal drug trade. So far this year, 465 explosions have occurred, and according to the police, 25 percent of the perpetrators behind the explosions are minors.
Reggery Gravenbeek was 17 years old when he was drawn into the criminal world in the Netherlands. Just over two years later, he was convicted of murder. Today, he works to help young people in Rotterdam. He believes that imprisonment for young individuals is only a small part of the solution.
Criminologist Yarin Eski at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam argues that punishing the very youngest members of gangs is pointless because they are interchangeable.
This report is from the Slinge suburb in Rotterdam by Sweden's Radio P3 correspondent, Love Lyssarides.
