Course Objective

As a final paper, the bachelor's thesis represents the final stage of the combined acquisition of the various skills that enables students to independently design and conduct a simple research project. The aim of the course is to support the students in a number of aspects, and to have them reflect on knowledge of, insight into and overview of the most important issues of their own discipline, their interdisciplinary research skills judgment and presentation skills. Also, this course aims to provide them with the tools to increase these insights, knowledge and skills, so that they reach the level required for possible advanced academic training.

Course Content

The bachelor's thesis is the completion of the undergraduate program. On the basis of this final paper on a self-selected topic in the field of Ancient Studies, students show that under the supervision of a lecturer they are capable of independently setting up a simple interdisciplinary research and carry it out. By means of this thesis, the final attainment levels of the programme in the field of knowledge and insight into their own discipline, research skills judgement and presentation are achieved. The bachelor thesis is an individual thesis, the content of which is supervised by an individual thesis supervisor. In addition students participate in the bachelor thesis colloquium. For further information on the thesis and thesis process, see the description on the UvA Canvas site of the course BA Thesis ACASA programmes (course code 13802A035Y).

Teaching Methods

Seminars in December (introduction) and in periods 4 and 5, with assignments. NB: the seminars have the character of a practical exercise, and participation is mandatory.Individual counseling.

Method of Assessment

The bachelor's thesis, as a written final paper, will be self assessed on the basis of a number of parameters concerning scientific level, research question, handling of primary sources, secondary literature, clarity, argumentation, style and nature of presentation, and working independently. This is assessed separately by two lecturers, who then jointly arrive at a final assessment and grade. In case of a fail the student is entitled to one re-examination by means of revision of the final paper. If the assessment is also negative, the student will have to write a new thesis on a new subject. Both the bachelor thesis and the participation in the thesis colloquium must be completed with a pass (or AVV).
