Course Objective

The student is able to independently formulate a feasible research question, by searching and assessing scientific literature. The student is able to independently design and conduct a research of reasonable substance. The student is able to independently write an academic report that conforms to the conventions demanded by the educational programme

Course Content

In a bachelor's thesis workgroup (minimally 2 and maximally 15) students will write an individual thesis under supervision of one or two lecturers, on a predetermined topic. For each specialisation, one or two topics may be offered.

Teaching Methods

In consultation with the lecturers, meetings will be scheduled in which students report on the progress of their research. Attendance to these meetings is mandatory. During the meetings, lecturers will explain to the students how to conduct the thesis research. They will also provide the students individually with feedback on subsequent parts of the thesis.

Method of Assessment

At the end of period 4, a thesis contract including a general research question and a workplan needs to be completed according to the demands of the lecturers. On the basis of the quality of the thesis contract and the participation of the student so far, a GO/STOP decision will be taken by the intended supervisor. When the thesis is completed, the supervisor and second reader both grade the thesis independently by means of an assessment rubric, and establish the final grade together. In case of an insufficient grade, feedback will be provided that states what needs to be done to deliver a revised version that will pass.

Literature

To be searched for by the students, aided by the lecturers

Target Audience

Third year CIS students, premaster CIS students
