Course Objective

Following the Basics of Systems Biology course (XB_0078), the students will apply their new skills on a Systems Biology project. The task is to analyze a system, formulate an appropriate model, analyze this model, and write up and present the project in a report and oral presentation. In this way, the students will not only deepen their systems biological way of thinking, but also practice their mathematical, presentation and writing skills. The students have about 2 weeks of full-time effort to work on this project, which can be split up over time, but no more than 2 months.

Course Content

The students will receive a biological system to analyze independently. They will acquire background knowledge about this system from the literature, formulate appropriate models for the system components, and then analyze this model. This procedure corresponds to the basic operating procedure in systems biological research.

Teaching Methods

We will meet 4 times: initially to discuss the topic of the project, after the initial reading period to discuss appropriate models, after the model analysis period, and before the final presentation. Students will submit a draft a week before final submission to receive feedback on their results and writing.

Method of Assessment

The assessment is based on three parts, similar to BSc/MSc internships: professional attitude & learning progress (40%), the report (40%), and the final presentation (20%).
