Course Objective

The Career & Academic Skills course intends to activate our students to thinking more professionally and in an engaged manner about their study track, internships and future careers as neuroscientists.

Course Content

The students will now put what they learned from the year 1 and 2 workshops and assignments into practice by producing their own learning portfolio. Topics covered during year 2 themed workshops include: Pitching an idea or project successfully, job market orientation, job application & CV preparation, open science & data management. For the final portfolio, students need to justify, design, carry out, and later reflect on their own self-directed major projects. We organize a "portfolio project inspiration session" early in period 1 to prepare students for designing the major project. The purpose of the major project is to give students the opportunity to build their CV and fill niches in their own professional development and transferrable skill-building away from the lab. Students will use input and feedback from their tutor, project mentors, peers, and other experts in the local scientific community to bring their major project ideas to fruition during the final semester of their degree. As part of this course, our students are encouraged to attend the alumni career event and our student research symposium, where student internship projects can be presented as scientific posters to peers and local academics.
