https://studiegids.vu.nl/en/courses/2024-2025/AM_1250The Career & Academic Skills course intends to activate our students to thinking more professionally and in an engaged manner about their study track, internships and future careers as neuroscientists.During year 1, we aim to provide some context, preparation & feedback on the professional skills that scientists (in & outside of academia) are often required to use next to lab research; such as communication, peer-review, self-reflection, networking, project planning, and open science practice. We'll discuss these issues critically and practice them using in-class activities and small-scale assignments. Workshop topics include communication & feedback skills, peer-review, presentation skills, poster and scientific figure design, self-reflective practice, networking, goal-setting, and project planning. We'll discuss these topics, analyze examples, and practice both with in-class activities and small assignments. During year 2 (AM_1268) you will put what we've learned from the year 1 workshops and assignments into practice by putting together a professional development learning portfolio with a major project. As part of this course, our students are encouraged to get involved in organizing and attending our alumni career event, and a student research symposium, where student internship projects can be presented as scientific posters to peers and local academics. Students are also encouraged to think about their second-year study plans.Year 1 active workshops, Year 2 feedback sessions, self-guided project work with mentors. This course runs across 2 academic years. All components must be completed & submitted in order to obtain 3 EC study credits during year 2 (course code = AM_1268). For year 1, attendance & active participation during workshops, with submitted homework assignments. For year 2, attendance, active participation during workshops with submitted homework assignments and submitted final project portfolio. Deadlines for course schedule will be communicated via the course manual & using CANVAS.Reading & preparation materials will be supplied in the CANVAS course atthe beginning of first semester. This is a compulsory course for students in master of Neurosciencesprogram.Workshops are given in small parallel workgroups of 10-15 students. After the course has started, students can sign up for workshop groups on Canvas. Canvas instructions will follow at the beginning of the academic year. After the course has started, students should sign up for workshop groups using Canvas, to a group that matches their own study schedule.
