A prerequisite to enter this course module is having passed the Introduction module Clinical Periodontology After completion of the module Clinical Course Periodontology-1 the studentis able to perform basic clinical periodontology (excluding periodontal surgery) in an independent mode.is able to apply proper diagnosis, prognosis and advanced treatment planning for patients with severe destructive periodontal diseasesis able to communicate properly and independently with the patient, the referring dentist, and to write a detailed yet concise report to the referring dentist in the form of a letter including presentations of a main and an alternative treatment planis able to communicate properly and independently to the physician(s) of the patient when applicable, and to research and interpret the medical history and prescribed medications and their interactions with the mucosal and periodontal tissues is able to perform proper periodontal charting and proper re- evaluation-chartings and be able to analyze and interpret the results of his/her treatments and re-evaluation, including the proposal of a first choice and alternative follow/up (definitive) treatment plan is able to prepare and present cases to the departmental staff members in case-presentation settings (e.g. lunch meetings), including proper background and relevant medical information, and to present proposed treatment plans has knowledge on periodontal surgery procedures and their indications, and has preclinical experience in the clinical principles of periodontal surgery. An important aspect is that the student has knowledge on and is able to apply the full set of surgical instruments, as well as to be able to work in sterility and hygiene of the surgical room.
Course Content
This clinical module is a continuation of module C1 at a higher level. This clinical module will deal with the intake of referred patients at our policlinic, where the student is expected to perform an intake procedure in an independent mode, applying proper diagnosis, prognosis and advanced treatment planning for patients with severe destructive periodontal diseases. The student will be trained in communicating properly with the referring dentist, and to writing a detailed yet concise report to the referring dentist in the form of a letter including presentations of a main and an alternative treatment plan. Also the student will be trained to communicate with the physicians of the patient when applicable and to research and interpret the medical history and prescribed medications and their interactions with the mucosal and periodontal tissues. The student will perform independently non-surgical periodontal treatment procedures and oral hygiene interventions in patients with severe periodontitis. The student is expected to present to the departmental staff members in lunch meetings his/her cases, including proper background and relevant medical information, and present proposed treatment plans. Advanced treatment planning, including periodontal surgery planning will be taught. This module includes the clinical principles of periodontal surgical procedures. In preclinical sessions and practice sessions the student will be prepared to perform periodontal surgery procedures on his/her patient. In these preparatory sessions and preclinical training, practice of periodontal surgical procedures on pig-jaws are included. An important aspect is familiarization with the set of surgical instruments, as well as training in sterility and hygiene of the surgical room.Teaching Methods
