Course Objective

The second course in creative writing underscores the skills learned in the introduction to creative writing and offers students a chance to explore the ins and outs of the book publishing industry in a practical manner. The objectives of this course are: (1) to familiarize students with the book publishing industry; (2) to learn to effectively critique work as an editor and copyeditor, (3) to familiarize students with marketing and publicity strategies In so doing, the course not only further trains students in writing, but teaches them about how the publishing industries of today operate, which can be useful for aspiring writers and for employment at book, journal, or magazine publishing houses.

Course Content

The course teaches students about the publishing industry from proposal to final product.

2 seminars of 2 hours each per week.

Target Audience

Second-year students of the BA track Literature and Society: English. Participation by students from outside of this track is not possible.

Custom Course Registration

There is a slightly different enrollment procedure for this module. The standard procedure of the Faculty of Humanities has students sign up for (i) the module, and (ii) the form of tuition (lecture and/or preferred seminar group). However, for this module the instructor will assign the students to the seminar groups. Therefore, students should sign up for (i) the module, but not for (ii) the seminar groups.

Additional Information

Attendance is compulsory. If you are absent at more than 20% of the course meetings, you cannot pass the course. Exceptions may be made in grave personal circumstances. Make sure to inform both your lecturer and the academic advisor in such cases.
