At the end of Elementary 1, students: Have a basic Latin vocabulary and understanding of elementary morphology and syntaxAre able to use instruments such as dictionaries/glossaries, annotations, grammars/overviews of morphology and syntaxAre able to translate simple Latin sentencesAre able to paraphrase simple Latin texts at section levelHave insight in the value of reading Latin texts in the primary language for understanding the meaning and value of historical sourcesThe course Elementary Latin 1 (6 ECTS) introduces you to Latin on a basic level. Students memorise a glossary and complete exercises on morphology and syntax. They train their skills in translating and interpreting small Latin texts. During the course, they are introduced to relatively simple text sources from Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. They also learn about the importance of reading sources in the primary language to understand the meaning and historical value.Seminars (2 x 2 hours a week, occasionally classes of 4 hours)'Written exams: 2 intermediate tests during class (2x20%) and a final exam (60%).Study materials will be distributed through Canvas.The course is open toBA 2 students in History and International StudiesBA students in Ancient Studies (who can take it as an elective)Minor students and other elective studentsThe course is intended for students with no prior knowledge of Latin. The course is therefore not open to students with a Dutch eindexamen Latijn or comparable secondary school certificates (e.g. British GCE level).
