https://studiegids.vu.nl/en/courses/2024-2025/P_BEMCG_1This course covers the following major learning outcomes spanning a clinical, neuropsychological and developmental psychological perspective on emotion, cognition and behaviour:You are able to apply knowledge about emotion, cognition and behaviour from a clinical, neuropsychological and developmental psychological perspective on case material as presented in the assignment and during the tutorials. You can describe the process model of emotion regulation from both an individual and social research perspective, including emotion regulation strategies, socialisation and intimate relationships. You can describe the development of cognitive functions, including attention and executive functioning, and relate this to daily functioning. You can describe risk factors, vulnerabilities and protective factors related to emotional development across the lifespan, including negativity bias, social cognition and exposure to traumatic events. You can describe relevant aspects of emotional development, including self-awareness, morality and self-regulation.You can explain the influence of the interaction between cognition and emotion on human decision-making.You can describe the mutual problematic effects of emotions, cognitions and behaviours and relate these to specific low-intensity interventions. In this course you will study emotion, cognition and behaviour from a clinical, neuropsychological and developmental perspective. At the end of the course, you can explain how (disorders in) emotion, cognition and behaviour can cause psychological (dys)function. Furthermore, you will be able to recognize and attend to dysfunctions in emotion, cognition and behaviour during practical exercises in the tutorials. We assume that psychological dysfunctions develop as the result of an interplay between contextual risk factors (e.g., low socioeconomic status), personal vulnerabilities (e.g., brain injury) and protective factors (e.g., attachment security). In addition, we will focus on current theories and models regarding emotion, cognition and behaviour, including neural development. We will address different stages of life, specifically early childhood, adolescence and adulthood. For each developmental period, an overview of the important risk factors, vulnerabilities and protective factors that contribute to the development of 'normal' and 'abnormal' emotions, cognitions, and behaviour will be presented. Lastly, you will learn to conduct a low-intensity treatment protocol (the Life Review Method) and report about it in a paper. This preminor consists of two interlinked parts:The first part (period 5) furthers your knowledge from the first year course Developmental psychology and psychopathology during lectures and seminars. Also, you will be conducting a low-intensity treatment protocol and write a report, that you will submit in period 6. Period 5 ends with an exam. The second part (period 6) focuses on specific themes (capita selecta) during lectures and tutorials. Researchers in the field of emotions, cognitions and behaviour will present their recent findings. At the end of this period, you will have an exam. The final grade of this period consists of a grade for the paper (about conducting the Life Review Method) and exam. This structure of the course requires you to start with the first part and not to start with the second part.Lectures, tutorials, assignment and exams.Part 1 of this preminor course is successfully completed with a pass for:the attendance requirement for the tutorials (6 of 7) in period 5the exam with MC-questions (grade >= 5.5) about the lectures and literature of period 5 In period 5 (part 1) you will be trained in the Life Review Method during two tutorials and you will then start with the assignment (interviewing and writing a paper). The paper is part of the assessment in period 6 (part 2). Part 2 is successfully completed with a pass for:the attendance requirement for the tutorials (3 of 3) in period 6the exam with MC-questions (grade >= 5.5) about the lectures and literature of period 6: 50% of the final gradethe paper on the life review method assignment (grade >= 5.5): 50% of the final grade At the end of the study period (during the summer), there will be an opportunity for a retake of the assignment and exams. Again: your are not allowed to start with part 2 before starting with part 1.See Canvas.Students should follow both Emotion, Cognition and Behaviour part 1, as well as Emotion, Cognition and Behaviour part 2 as part of the preminor. You can only enroll for this course after the information session for the preminors early February.
