Course Objective

In 2021, the Netherlands spent 10.2% of Gross Domestic Product on health care, compared to 9.2% on average in the OECD countries. Based on trends that are visible in healthcare, such as the ageing population, the availability of expensive innovations, an increasing shortage of professionals, changing needs of patients and finally the recent capacity issues due to Covid-19, the expenditure on healthcare will continue to grow in the coming years. The government is looking for measures to control this trend. In order to operate efficiently, healthcare manager’s knowledge of the playing field in which healthcare organisations operate are essential to make a good translation for the internal control based on management information. The course Financial Management in Healthcare Organisations is part of the minor Health Care Management and provides students tools and instruments which are essential for the financial management of cure and care organisations. At the end of this course students have developed knowledge and competences about different topics of financial management in health care:Students have knowledge about budgeting and control systems in health care organisations (bridging theory and practice – knowledge) and can apply this knowledge in a health care context (bridging theory and practice –application).Students have knowledge of different costing systems (bridging theory and practice – knowledge) and can apply and analyse these systems in a health care context (bridging theory and practice – application).Students have knowledge of different pricing systems (bridging theory and practice – knowledge) and can apply and analyse these systems in a health care context (bridging theory and practice – application).Students have knowledge about methods to evaluate investment proposals and can apply this knowledge in a health care context (bridging theory and practice – application).Students have knowledge about financial statements of health care organisations and can assess the financial position and the financial performance of health care organisations.Furthermore, in this course students develop their social professional skills by working on case solutions in multidisciplinary teams and by giving presentations prepared in these teams.

Course Content

Het vak financieel management van zorginstellingen is relevant voor SBE-studenten die hun financiële kennis en vaardigheden willen toepassen in de gezondheidszorg. De cursus biedt ook geneeskundestudenten, studenten gezondheidswetenschappen, gezondheid en leven, studenten sociale wetenschappen en andere studenten relevante kennis en competenties op het gebied van financieel management om in een zorginstelling te gaan werken. Meer specifiek richt deze cursus zich op het gebruik van managementinformatie, planning & control systemen en financiële boekhoudkundige informatie om weloverwogen beslissingen te kunnen nemen.
