Course Objective

Students acquire knowledge about some historical ways of doing mathematics (procedures and proofs). Students acquire a general overview of the history of the role of mathematics in western culture. Students acquire insight in the influence of society on the development of mathematics, as well as the values that accompany the use of mathematics in several fields. Thereby students will be better equipped to reflect on their subject of study.

Course Content

Various subjects from the history of mathematics are treated chronologically. Every lecture a historical mathematical fact or procedure will be treated in the context of its time. Changing values and their effect on the (use of) mathematics are discussed.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, workgroups and assignments.

Method of Assessment

Final written exam. The assignments may lead to one bonus point, if all assignments are handed in and the average grade of the best four is 6 or more.
