Course Objective

Globalization has presented entrepreneurs with an increasing number of opportunities in foreign markets. Located at the intersection between International Business and Entrepreneurship, the discipline of International Entrepreneurship (IE) focuses on firms which cross national borders in an innovative, proactive, and risk-seeking fashion to create value. This course aims to lay a foundation of knowledge and skills that will enable students to approach entrepreneurial activities in an evidence-based manner. Upon completion of this course, students will:Have thorough knowledge of relevant theories and methods and an evidence-based approach to solving complex business problems.Show a critical mastery of core International Management theory, quantitative and qualitative methods, and state-of-the-art thinking about the discipline.Be able to design substantiated solutions to complex practical problems and find opportunities to formulate innovative ideas based on appropriate theories, methods, and techniques.Have the professional and social skills to interact with other professionals.

Course Content

This course focuses on the skills and knowledge required to establish and grow a new venture and examines the key success factors in creating a business which has an international market focus. Given the complex and inter-related nature of the international business environment, it is important for you to understand, for example, how the social, economic, political, legal and financial factors have influenced, and continue to influence entrepreneurship across borders. Specifically, the course will cover the following topics:What is international entrepreneurship and what challenges does it create?How do entrepreneurs develop business ideas that are innovative as well as value-generating, and how do they deal with the uncertainty of building a new venture in an international context?What are the formal and informal institutions influencing international entrepreneurship, and how can entrepreneurs create and grow ventures across cultural environments?What are the most common trade-offs and pitfalls associated with business growth, and how can entrepreneurs address those challenges?How can entrepreneurs acquire the resources they need to grow their businesses, and what is the impact of international influences on resource acquisition strategies?To facilitate learning and practical application, the course includes a variety of teaching formats and materials, such as lecture slides, case studies, and the application of theoretical frameworks to practical problems of real organizations.

Individual as well as group assessment.

Literature

The course literature will be based on a selection of academic articles to be read in preparation for each lecture and tested in the individual examinations.

Students must be enrolled in the Entrepreneurship Master and have completed a Bachelor program.
