Course Objective

1) Further develop and apply knowledge and insight in the fields of museum studies and the specialization area of art history, cultural studies, design cultures or history in the practice of museums/ cultural institutions. 2) Critically reflect on the acquisition, conservation, research, communication and representation of objects of art and culture in museums or cultural institutions. 3) Make accessible academic and/ or museum research for a broader public. 4) Acquire competences and skills in the domains of 1) organization and policy, 2) research, archival work, registration and making available of research results, 3) art handling, 4) restoration and conservation 5) representation and communication, and 6) production (exhibition, symposium or program, other kinds of presentations). 5) Exercise the substantive tasks of the profession of curator on an academic level.

Course Content

The internship takes place at one of the following museums or cultural institutions: Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, Amsterdam Museum, Wereldmuseum, Frans Halsmuseum Haarlem, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam, Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Kröller Müller Museum Otterlo, Jewish Cultural Quarter Amsterdam, Textielmuseum Tilburg, Mauritshuis Den Haag, Museum Arnhem, or Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. The concrete content of the internship is dependent on the nature, goal, and programme of the museum or institution and the department where the student is placed. In consultation with the internship supervisor (programme coordinator) and the institutional supervisor (curator) assigned to the student a plan will be devised for the content of the internship, which will subsequently be monitored at least every three months. In each museum or institution the following aspects pertinent to the tasks of a curator will be addressed: organization and policy; research, archival work, registration of collections (relevant database systems) and making available of research results; art handling, restoration and conservation (procedures around the placement of objects in and outside the museum or institution); representation and communication; and production (exhibition, symposium or program, other kinds of displays or presentations). Halfway the programme an evaluation meeting will be held, and the student completes the internship with an internship and competence report.

Method of Assessment

The supervision is shared by university professors and curators from thepartner institutions, and takes place at least every three months. An intermediate evaluation will be held halfway the internship. The final assessment of the internship takes place on the basis of an internship and competence report written according to guidelines (see internship guide) (100%).

Additional Information

The internship
- in which students work as curators-in-training
- takes place over a period of one year, from 1 February to 31 January the following year. Students are expected to work four days a week, from Monday to Thursday. Each Friday is devoted to the core module Curatorial Practices in the Contemporary World I and II. The internship placement is decided on the basis of internship events organised at VU and UvA (at which curators discuss upcoming projects for the curators-in-training), individual visits to the museums / institutions participating in the programme, a museum report and an interview with the programme coordinators.

Entry Requirements

Students must have taken and passed Collecting, Curating and Display I and II (L_KAMAMUS021 and L_KAMAMUS022) and 18 ECTS of electives before the beginning of the internship on 1 February.
