Course Objective

After the course, students have an advanced understanding of the mathematical and statistical concepts underlying regression analysis (bridging theory and practice
- knowledge). They also have basic knowledge of algorithmic approaches, alongside more traditional model-based approaches. They are able to critically evaluate the quality of empirical research in economic applications (bridging theory and practice
- knowledge & broadening your horizon). They are also capable of performing empirical research themselves (academic and research skills, bridging theory and practice
- application & broadening your horizon). The latter implies that they are able to make decisions about the appropriate statistical model, can deal with real-life data, are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the selected model and are able to estimate and interpret its parameters.

Course Content

This course makes students familiar with standard microeconometric methods. These methods are often used in economic research to test predictions from economic theory. In addition, students also have basic knowledge of algorithmic approaches, alongside more traditional model-based approaches. During the course, attention is devoted to both the theory underlying the different techniques and the practical application. Theoretical knowledge is assessed in the final exam, while the implementation of the different methods is assessed in empirical assignments. The software package R is used in the empirical assignments. An important aspect of the course is that students learn how to interpret estimation results.

Teaching Methods

Main lectures. Workshops.

Method of Assessment

Evaluation will be based on individual quizzes, team assignments and the individual, written, closed-book exam.
