Course Objective

Law is a versatile and dynamic module and covers many aspects that businesses deal with. Every country has its own laws. This English language track of the law course offers an introduction into law relevant for doing business. The focus will be on Dutch law and law of the European Union. Foreign law examples are offered to show the similarities or peculiarities of legal systems. The topics to be addressed are: constitutional structures, legislative process, judicial systems, principles of law and human rights. The fields of law that will be covered are private law
- including contract law
- Intellectual property law, labour law and Data protection. Entrepreneurship is the focal point of this course: its is all about the laws that companies may come across in their activities. English language students should make sure to register in the ENG tutorial group(s).

Course Content

This course has a Dutch language track and an English language track. This is the outline for the English. Although the topics are the same, their coverage is different. The principles of legal academic thinking are taught on the basis of literature, case law and statute law. In the course you will among other things learn how to interpret and apply statute law (Academic and research skills). You will acquire knowledge of and insight into national (primarily Dutch) law and international law (mainly EU law) and regulation relevant for economists. The focus is on elements of law that are relevant for doing business. The course starts with an overview of fields of law that are relevant for business activities; after that the focus will be on the company’s participation in legal transactions (Bridging Theory and Practice). This is done by case based learning (Knowledge). Through tutorial assignments the students learn to apply the knowledge gained in this into practise in a team effort. After completing this course you:Will have insight in principles of law, legal systems and the legislative processHave insight into the structure and scope of EU law and its effects on EU member statesHave insight into civil dispute resolutionHave insight into basic private law issues related to business activities with a focus on business contracts and contracting, [intellectual] property and tortWill understand the legal structure of companies, the concept of legal personality, capitalisation of a company and principles of labour law and insolvency law and you will be more aware of the legal aspects of many current events
