Course Objective

The course focuses on the procedure and practice of litigation before international courts and tribunals. The students familiarize themselves with the institutional design of selected European and international courts, such as the Court of Justice of the European Union, the WTO Appellate Body, Investment Arbitration, the Court of the Economic Community of West African States, the African Court of Justice and Human Rights or the Interamerican Court of Human Rights. Through the comparative framework introduced in the course students can reflect on broader questions of strategy of litigants, access to justice and judicial authority. The assessment includes a moot court and a final exam.

Course Content

The course is addressed mainly to students from the track European and International Law, but could also be interesting for students from the International Business Law (Trade and Investment). The course will be offered as part of the JUDILL Jean Monnet Chair: Judges vs Illiberalism. Legal Mobilization for the Rule of Law, which will mean that the students enrolled in the course will be exposed to interdisciplinarity through applying social science methods to the study of international courts. The students will also profit from guest speakers invited in the framework of the chair to intervene in the course.
