Course Objective

To obtain knowledge about low intensity treatments and to gain insight into their application, effectiveness, and characteristics. In addition, students are introduced to a number of common therapeutic techniques and learn how they can apply these techniques in practice.

Course Content

Low intensity treatments are characterized by a relatively low dose of the intervention, less support by a therapist or coach and more self-management by the patient, and a greater use of (digital) resources such as telephone or internet. In this course students are introduced to low intensity psychological interventions, with attention for its conceptualization, effectiveness, and application. In addition, students learn practical skills and techniques that are needed to carry out low intensity psychological interventions in practice. During the seminars different therapeutic techniques such as psycho-education, behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring, and motivational interviewing are practiced. Throughout the course attention will be given to digital applications such as internet interventions and serious gaming that can provide support to low intensity treatments.

Teaching Methods

10 Lectures and 4 work groups. Attendance and active participation in seminars is required. Students need to prepare for the seminars.

Method of Assessment

Written exam with open ended questions.
