Upon completion of the Major Systems Biology Research Project, you will be able to perform independent research in the domain of Systems Biology. Objectives of the course:- To understand a research problem in a specific field and translate this to a solution using computational methods and/or quantitative experiments [applying knowledge and understanding, making judgements, learning skills].
- To use balanced mathematics, molecular biology and programming skills to perform research in Systems Biology [(applying) knowledge and understanding].
- To focus on a specialised topic in depth, and understand and judge research in context of current scientific literature [applying knowledge and understanding, making judgements].
- To practise professional skills, such as planning a research project and cooperating with other specialists in a complex research setting [communication skills, learning skills].
Course Content
o You need to gain between 42-60 EC from a Minor and Major Research Project for your Bioinformatics and Systems Biology MSc degree. o The Major has a minimum duration of 30 ECTS (5 months). o The Major has a maximum duration of 60 ECTS (10 months). o Minor and Major Research Projects must be on a different topic. o The Major Systems Biology Research Project needs to be within the field of Systems Biology, and needs to contain a molecular / cellular biology component, and a quantitative component focused on interpretation at the system level. o Research projects should have sufficient modelling, data analysis and systems biology components, as determined by your VU/UvA examiner o You cannot start your Major Research Project before you have completed all your compulsory and specialisation courses For detailed information on the research projects please see: https://canvas.vu.nl/courses/36860/pages/research-projects.Teaching Methods
This course consists of an individual research project.Method of Assessment
