Learning goals of an internship:- Knowledge and understanding: students are able to work on the level of an academic student or graduate within the field of Heritage Studies with a high level of independence.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: students are able to apply academic skills and knowledge in professional and practical contexts.
- Communication: students have social skills regarding professional relationships, codes of conduct, working hours, work pace, work processes and professional organisations.
- Lifelong learning skills: students have gained experience in developing a professional attitude and skills.
- Making judgements: Students are acquainted with the job market, in such a way that they are able to confront their expectations with professional practice. Additionally, a research internship has the following learning goal:
- Making judgements; Knowledge and understanding: Students are able to design and execute a research project independently within the context of an institution in the heritage field and based on a request (and research question) formulated by the institution. It is optional for students to use a research internship as a preparation for their master's thesis. Results of the research executed during the internship can be used in so far as they are complementary to the research of the master thesis.
Course Content
As the range of professional possibilities of Heritage Master graduates is very broad, there is a multitude of options for internships. The work activities should benefit both the students as well as the host organisation. Day-to-day supervision on a content level can be expected from the host organisation, whereas the supervisor from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam will focus on the learning goals and process. It is also the supervisor's role to maintain contact with the organisation that offers the internship, to make agreements and make sure they are followed.Teaching Methods

An internship report, that will be marked by the host organisation as well as the supervisor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.Target Audience
Master Students in Heritage Studies.Additional Information
Students search and choose their own work placement, which needs to be approved by their supervisor and Examination board at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The internship has a maximum of 12 ECTS, the period in which the work placement is planned in accordance with the supervisor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. It is strongly advised to finalise the internship no later than March (end of period 4), in order to avoid study delays. A work placement contract is needed prior to the start of the internship between the supervisor, the student and the host organisation. Please check the work placement manual for details on how to obtain permission to start.Recommended background knowledge
Specific knowledge might be required for organizations specialized in certain parts of the heritage field, such as archaeology, building history or architectural history.Language of Tuition
