Course Objective

The student understands the basic structure and function of the neuromuscular system as a model for neuronal communication and interaction. The student understands the relation between the electric activity at the neuronal and the muscle cell level. The student gets familiar with macroscopic electrophysiological recording techniques, including M/EEG and (f)MRI measurements. The student can interpret encephalographic data for the functional and diagnostic relevance. The student knows the important mechanisms behind central nervous diseases and how these are reflected in abnormal brain activity.

Course Content

This course will approach the function of the human nervous system from different angles. Students will be familiarized with basic approaches to neural communication and interaction, starting with fundamental (electric) properties of neurons towards neuronal networks in the central nervous system and in the periphery. To enable experimental assessments and interpretation of data, various electrophysiology and other neurophysiological imaging techniques will be discussed. Finally, the use of relevant methods in the diagnostic process of central nervous disorders will be sketched.

Teaching Methods

Lectures 16 hours, seminars 6 hours, practicals 8 hours. Overall, the course circles around three main themes: (i) single cell properties, (ii) the peripheral nervous system, and (iii) nervous activity in the cortex. Per theme a set of assignments have to be completed in written form.

Method of Assessment

40% assignments and performance during the practicals; 60% final exam
- the exam will take 2.75 hours (including dyslexia time) and will consist of open questions.

Research articles and lecture handouts will be provided before the course.

Basic knowledge and understanding of (neuro-)anatomy and physiology, electrical circuits.
