Course Objective

Students become informed about:
- The possibilities and potential pitfalls in the Bachelor’s program Literature and Society, track English.
- The matching of theoretical concept and literary text, a key aspect of the program’s thesis trajectory.

Course Content

This course is built around two assignments:
- Interview: first-year students interview a third-year student of the Literature and Society program, to learn about the program’s possibilities and potential pitfalls. They subsequently present on their findings in class.
- Thesis folder: students write out possible combinations of theoretical concept and literary text in preparation for the thesis trajectory, and discuss these combinations in class.

Teaching Methods


- We meet once a week for two hours in period 4.
- Attendance is mandatory.
- Meetings are held on campus; no hybrid alternative is offered.
- Prior to each meeting, students complete a Canvas assignment.
- Devices with access to social media (this includes laptops) are not allowed in class. If an exception needs to be made for medical reasons, students must contact the academic advisor prior to the start of the course.
- There will be no meetings in period 5.

Method of Assessment

Successful completion of the course is contingent on satisfactory completion of both the interview assignment (including in-class presentation) and the thesis folder. There is no re-sit opportunity for the interview assignment. The course is assessed with either a pass (“voldaan”) or a fail (“niet voldaan”).
