Course Objective

Competences covered according to the General Educational Framework for Oral Health Care 2022: 1.1-5, 1.9-11, 1.13, 1.18, 1.38, 4.1-8 The student
• has deep knowledge on the following periodontal surgery techniques for the purpose of their indications and contraindications, advantages and disadvantages and the effectiveness: gingivectomy, electro surgery, laser surgery, apically positioned flap and modified Widman flap with and without bone surgery, mucogingival and plastic periodontal surgery, treatment of alveolar ridge defects, peri-implantitis defects and regenerative periodontal surgery. In depth comprehension of the topic of periodontal regeneration (new attachment versus re-attachment as well new alveolar bone vs radiographic defect fill) for the critical analysis of the controversial literature associated with this topic.
• has thorough understanding of the principles of wound healing on the clinical, macroscopic and microscopic level, with the role of the various periodontal tissues in wound healing, and understanding the various forms of wound healing in relation to the various periodontal surgical techniques.
• understands the current principles of minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Course Content

This course deals with the science behind and the indications for the various periodontal surgery procedures. In particular the long term effects of these different techniques in terms of stabilization of periodontal disease and the clinical results of them in terms of pocket depth reduction and attachment level changes and the prognosis of the periodontal tissues after surgery. Moreover there will be a focus on surgical techniques with the aim to regenerate lost periodontal tissues, including alveolar bone; the long term stability of regenerated tissues and the science behind them are being taught. In conjunction with the various surgical procedures, also the clinical, histological and cellular aspects of wound healing are dealt with in this course. A special place among the surgical techniques has muco-gingival surgery and plastic surgery of the periodontal tissues; these will be dealt with from both esthetic and functional aspects. Moreover techniques for the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis are taught. In modern times, some traditional surgical techniques may be replaced by minimally invasive surgical procedures. The new developments in this field will be discussed and scientific literature on this topic will also be focus of attention.

Method of Assessment

Formative assessments: For each seminar you will have the following preperation: 1. Read the selected articles. 2. Be prepared for presenting the article (one of the students can be appointed in class) 3. Write down any critical questions and comments By joining the discussion, you will experience your own level of knowledge. Summative assessments: 1. This course is subject to a 100% attendance requirement. 2. Prepare for the written exam with open ended questions and 100 multiple choice questions by learning from the discussions, the presentations and the articles (grade: 1-10). Grading: Assessment: Weight: Minimum subgrade: 1. Presentation & debate conditional pass 2. Written exam 100% 5,5 If all summative assessments have been achieved with (more than) the minimum subgrade before the deadlines, the endgrade for this course will be registered in SAP. If a grade is missing, the endgrade registered will be not applicable (NA). If one or more grades do not meet the minimum subgrade criterion, the endgrade is calculated using the weigths, but can not be registered higher than 5.
