Course Objective

Competences covered according to the General Educational Framework for Oral Health Care (2020): 1.1-5, 1.9-11, 1.13, 1.18, 4.1-8 The student
• understands the various causes and treatment options for halitosis, and deep knowledge on oral microbiology.
• understands the interrelationship of periodontitis to pulpal disease (perio-endo lesions) and the various approaches to treatment.
• has adequate knowledge on the (dis)advantages of adjunctive orthodontic, restorative and prosthetic therapies in periodontal case management, and their long-term effects.
• has thorough knowledge on the epidemiology, etiology and treatment options for peri-implantitis, for critical analysis of the possible controversies in the scientific literature.

Course Content

This module deals with various periodontology related subjects and special risk factors for periodontitis. Bad breath (halitosis) is mostly the result of periodontitis, but also non-periodontitis related halitosis will be discussed; the scientific literature on the diagnosis, etiology and treatment of halitosis will be scrutinized. Endodontic infections may aggravate periodontitis; vice versa periodontitis may cause endodontic infections. Therefore the perio-endo and endo-perio lesions will be discussed. Other aspects of periodontal case management will also be dealt with, such as orthodontic, restorative and prosthetic therapies. Also in this module the epidemiology and risk factors for peri-implantitis will be dealt with. The literature will be studied to discuss diagnosis, etiology, prognosis and treatment.
