Course Content

The purpose of this course is to broaden your horizon, to increase your self-awareness and to prepare you optimally for the job market. These are integral parts of the learning goals of your Master programme. The course consists of three parts: 1. Job market preparation SBE Career Services offers several different workshops that help students in preparing them for their professional career and job market interviews. Examples of such workshops are Find a Job that loves you Back, Elevator Pitch, Ace the Interview and Crack the Financial Case. These workshops are organized throughout the academic year. Students are required to take at least two workshops during the year. 2. Ethics Moral philosophy studies responsibilities or duties as conceived by acting individuals in order to justify their acts. Organization ethics is questioning the moral behaviour of organizations as such and of individuals acting within organizations. There are several historical examples of grave misconduct in financial companies. Purpose of the Ethics part of this course is to confront students with concrete situations that are obviously wrong. How can you deal with these situations as junior investment professional? Deliverables for this part will be communicated on Canvas. 3. Self reflection Reflection requires cognitive skills to reflect on, but also meta cognition. Meta cognition is what you know about your cognitive skills. However, knowing what you can, or what is difficult for you is not enough to be a successful learner or problem solver. Most successful in learning are those who have good cognitive skills (expressed in high IQ), combined with good meta cognitive skills. Meta cognitive skills help you to adapt your learning strategies if they do not work out well. For instance, you know you start preparations to close to a deadline, and you also know promising yourself to do this differently does not work. Based on meta cognitive skills you could change your approach and start a working group, as you know some peer pressure will do the job. Such meta cognitive abilities explain as much of you study success and problem solving abilities, as your cognitive skills. Employers are keen on this, as your cognitive skills can become outdated, but not your meta cognitive skills. Deliverables for this part will be communicated on Canvas.
