Course Objective

The Professional and Personal Identity (hereafter: PPI) learning line is a course that revolves around your professional and personal development. We help you discover how to get the most out of your study time and how to furnish your study time, in a way that suits you and your ambitions. At VU, you are at the helm of your own development and education. We coach you in this. PPI has
- in the first year
- four goals: Getting to know your way around. Within the study programme, faculty, VU and academic community, both offline and online. What is what? Who is who? What are the rules and procedures, for example when taking exams? Who can you turn to in which cases and how do you reach them? Learning to study. What is scientifically proven to be the best way to study? And what works for you? Academic forming. What is your role as a student? What expectations come with it? How are you part of the actual programme? What are the written and unwritten norms? And how do you relate to them? Bonding. We want you to have the opportunity to get to know your fellow students, the curriculum, the programme's staff, the offer at VU and the future work field, so that you can benefit the most from it. Who are your fellow students and lecturers? What do they bring to teaching? What can you learn from them? What is the importance of you, as future jurists, for (global) society? And what does that mean for your behaviour and responsibilities? In PPI, we bring together all the knowledge, skills and experiences you gain during the bachelor's programme and explore what these mean for who you are and what you stand for as a person and as a professional, so that you can develop into a valuable participant in the field. PPI is therefore offered in every year of the bachelor's programme. In the second and third year, the focus is on talent and competence development, (study) career choices and outflow to the minor, master's and/or labour market. You map out your professional and personal development in your own portfolio. Thanks to your portfolio, you can not only say you are competent or experienced in something, but you can also substantiate it. In this way, during and after the bachelors’ programme, you will be well prepared for job applications and other selection procedures and you will know exactly how you flourish best.

Course Content

Every year, the PPI programme includes a variety of interactive and activating activities, including meetings with your group, workshops, sessions with guest speakers, field trips (e.g. to court or academic events like a promotion) and individual coaching sessions. To this end, we collaborate with in-house experts (including the faculty's academic advisors and Career Services) and alumni. You can find all information about the PPI programme on Canvas.

Method of Assessment

PPI has no summative assessment. This means that PPI does not require you to take a graded exam (assignment).

Custom Course Registration

In the first year of the bachelor’s programme, you will be placed in a group by the education administration. Each group is linked to a lecturer and a senior student. These are your PPI coaches. Your coaches will be your first point of contact within VU from August onwards. In the second and third year of the bachelor’s programme, you need to sign up for PPI yourself via the Sign-in module on VU.nl. You will then be assigned to a group via Canvas and linked to a coach.

Additional Information

Are you starting the first year of the bachelor's programme in September? If so, mid-August one of your coaches will invite you to the kick-off meeting of your group via email. This meeting will take place at the VU on Wednesday afternoon 28, Thursday 29 or Friday 30 August. The purpose of the meeting is to get acquainted with your coaches and fellow students, tell you everything about PPI and make sure you are well prepared to start the bachelor’s programme.

Explanation Canvas

PPI has a separate Canvas environment for every study year. In that Canvas environment, you will find all the information about PPI. Moreover, your coaches can use Canvas to inform you about matters relevant to you or your group.
