This overarching objective will be approached through achieving the following sub-objectives. At the end of this course students should be able to: Outline and apply key theories of social power and social influence and basic research methods Distinguish sources of power and influence tactics (in their interactions, in the groups where they function, in society) Assess the consequences of power and social influence: for the group, for the powerholder, and for the power recipient Critically assess the positive and negative sides to power and influencePower and social influence are fundamental concepts in social sciences. However, people normally approach these topics as taboo. Their study is, however, crucial to understand group functioning and social interactions at large. In this course we will study the topics of power and social influence from a social psychological perspective. Some important questions that will be addressed in the course are: How do people and groups influence others? What are the sources of power and of social influence in social groups? Is power imbalance in a group advantageous? How do people react to power when is used to influence them? This course complements the first course on leadership within this preminor by focusing on power and social influence. This course is a first introduction to the main themes, research methods and practical applications in the field of social power and social influence.Lectures and tutorial groups.Assignments and exam.Articles and book chapters.Enrollment is only possible after the pre-minor info session in February.Students should follow both Leadership, Power and Social influence Part 1, and Leadership, Power and Social influence Part 2. Part 1 will focus on leadership and is coordinated by the section Organizational Psychology, Part 2 will focus on Power and Social Influence and it is coordinated by the section Social Psychology.
