Course Objective

This course builds upon the skills that you have learned in the course Psychological Communication 1: Basic Skills. The aim of Psychological Communication 2: Professional Skills is to apply the various basic skills in professional situations. These situations are, among others, when you have to deliver bad news in a breaking bad news conversation, when you have to handle complaints and when you do a behavior focused interview. The course consists of 6 training sessions in which we practice as much as possible.

Course Content

Professional communication skills are indispensable when you work as a psychological professional. This course, among others, focuses on the following situations: breaking bad news, complaint handling and behavior focused interviewing. In all these situations, it is important that you have certain basic skills and that you know how to use these. For example, you need to be able to listen carefully, ask questions, accurately summarize what someone has said, reflect emotions and give constructive feedback. Many of these skills are learned by bringing it into practise, not just at work but also outside. In your bachelor program the foundation is laid for the development of these skills, which will be sharpened and refined in your further career. In the course Psychological Communication 1 you have gotten acquainted with the basic skills. In this course these skills will be refreshed and further professionalized in various practical situations.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 6 training sessions (12 hours) and self-study (73 hours). Attendance is mandatory. If you are to miss a training session due to circumstances beyond your control, this can be allowed. But you need to give notice to the teacher in advance. Consequently, you will need to make up for your absence by means of an extra assignment. Missing more than one seminar is not allowed; in that case, you cannot complete this course.
