Course Content

Recruitment and selection comprise two of the essential functions of Human Resource Management (HRM). This course will provide theoretical and practical knowledge of and insights into contemporary issues in the field of employee recruitment, selection, and assessment. This knowledge is of utmost importance for SHRM graduates because recruitment and selection determine the quality of the employees in an organization and thereby impact the organization’s performance. Furthermore, numerous SHRM graduates are employed at consultancies/departments involved in recruitment, selection, and assessment. Organizational environments in which recruitment and selection instruments are being used have continued to evolve and generally become increasingly complex. This course will therefore focus on (new) processes for developing and evaluating such instruments. For example, you will learn how to conduct structured interviews (both as an applicant and a recruiter), and we will work closely together with businesses to discuss complex challenges, e.g., making their staffing process more inclusive and evidence-based.

Recommended background knowledge

Prior knowledge of HRM practices, and specifically recruitment and selection practices, is recommended. A basic understanding of the HRM function, which is part of the period 1 courses in the SHRM specialization, is needed for this course. We also strongly recommend a solid understanding of basic methods and statistics, as the course contains topics related to reliability and validity. Past editions of the course show that a solid understanding of such issues helps significantly in the course.
