Course Objective

After taking this course, the students will be able to:
- Read and study a scientific paper in depth so that its main idea(s) and all its arguments and methods can be explained.
- Identify the relevant scientific literature around a specific practical research question and carry out solid desk research based on scientific literature (a sort of "review") related to that question.
- Present and summarize academic papers, both orally and in writing.
- Critically discuss scientific literature.

Course Content

This course aims at preparing the student for screening, reading, and understanding academic literature. This is particularly useful in particular for the master project, where the student should consider relevant literature for the research question at hand. Getting acquainted with the literature consists of two elements: (i) being able to read and study in depth a specific academic paper, and (ii) carrying out a review (desk research) of scientific literature related to a chosen research question. Both of these elements are addressed during the seminar.

Teaching Methods

Each student gives two presentations (each about a different academic paper) in a seminar format, getting feedback from the lecturer and the other students. Each student also writes a short report/literature review centered around the two selected academic papers and the underlying common research question. Each student is asked to provide constructive and helpful feedback on the presentations and reports of his/her peers. The course manual provides more details.

Method of Assessment

Presentations (2x), written final report, attendance, and quality of given feedback. More details may be found in the course manual.
