After finishing this course, the student:- will be acquainted with a social scientific perspective of religion in a secular age, in particular with the sociology of religion, the psychology of religion, and pedagogy or religious education;
- will have knowledge of relevant basic analytical concepts and theories of the social scientific study of religion;
- will be able to critically read and reflect on literature in which sociological, psychological or educational empirical studies on religion in a secular age are used.
Course Content
In this course, the student will be introduced in social theories that are important for the study of religion and theology. These are, for example, secularization, multiple religious belonging, believing without belonging, privatization, individualization, and globalization. The students will get acquainted with the social scientific study of religion, in particular with the sociology of religion, the psychology of religion, and pedagogy or religious education.Teaching Methods
Interactive Seminars. Because of the interactivity during the meetings attendance is obligatory. Prior to each meeting, a preparatory assignment should be made. This assignment helps to process the material in an active way and offers opportunities to deepen and exchange during the meeting itself.]Method of Assessment
