Course Content

How do companies such as Google, Tesla, Netflix or BMW continuously create new market spaces, and revolutionize the world? Their strategic entrepreneurship not only makes them outperform the competition; it makes competition close to irrelevant. Yet, despite these inspiring examples, in the end only very few companies have and/or can maintain such an entrepreneurial culture and strong innovation spirit. See, for example, how Chat GTP is currently challenging Google's dominant position in the market for search engines. Or how the established meat industry is being potentially disrupted by artificial meat by means of either plant-based -, cell-cloning or fermentation-based technology. Why then is strategic entrepreneurship and innovation so difficult for many established companies? And what can they do to boost their innovation performance and foster organizational renewal? These two questions form the heart of the course on Strategic Entrepreneurship & Organizational Renewal. To address these two key questions, this course focuses on the theory and practice of both barriers against innovation and organizational renewal as well as ways in which firms and organizations can overcome these barriers effectively. In particular, during the lectures, we aim to provide you with the knowledge, insights and skills to assess existing conditions and processes for nurturing strategic entrepreneurship and innovation. In addition, during the tutorials, we want you to form your own opinion about innovation and new business development within an established company, and to give you the opportunity to practice communicative skills related to strategic entrepreneurship and organizational renewal. Finally, we want you to consider future digital developments in strategies for strategic entrepreneurship and innovation with the aim to reshape the competitive landscape. The course is (very) intensive, has a high workload from the beginning, and requires you to work in a team from week 1 on. You are therefore advised to start reading the course papers before the teaching period starts, and to start forming a team with other students in your tutorial group before or right after the first lecture. Throughout the course, you have to keep up-to-date with the course readings. You will be assessed twice during the first four weeks on your team´s ability to integrate the course materials into two real-life cases. The course relies on a framework that makes a key distinction between execution-oriented activities of renewal and innovation vis-à-vis the organization conditions in which these renewal and innovation activities are embedded. This framework forms the directing thread for the entire course and, in this way, secures that its learning goals will be accomplished in a consistent and comprehensive manner.
