Course Objective

The aim of this course is to develop the ability to address advanced topics in talent identification and development. We will achieve this aim by learning to:Compare and contrast different models of talent development;Evaluate the potential efficacy of different contemporary forms of talent identification;Evaluate ethical considerations in the identification and development of talent;Analyse data relevant for talent identification and development;Formulate and communicate recommendations on important issues in talent identification and development.

Course Content

The ability to identify and develop talent in athletes is a central role for many coaches, scientists, and sport administrators. National and professional sport organisations invest substantial amounts of time and money in establishing systems designed to identify and nurture talent, yet there remains considerable doubt about which approach is most likely to be successful, and how effective these systems may be. Moreover, sport organisations must deal with a range of challenges (e.g., cognitive biases, heuristics, and beliefs) that may impede effective talent identification and development. This course on Talent Identification and Development will assess advanced knowledge about contemporary methods for identifying and developing talent in sport and other areas of expertise (e.g., music, games). Talent identification and development will be addressed from different perspectives including psychology, motor learning, physiology, and data analytics. A problem-based learning approach using case studies will be adopted to foster interactive discussions to address some of the more complex topics.

Teaching Methods

Eight case-study discussion sessions will provide students with the opportunity to learn in a highly interactive and dynamic way. Attendance in the case study discussion groups is compulsory. It is not possible to pass the course without attending the discussion sessions.

Method of Assessment

Students will be assessed on their (1) contributions to the case-study discussion sessions, and (2) performance in a final exam consisting of open-ended questions.

Literature

Students will be required to read a case study and associated readings before attending each of the case-study discussion sessions.
