Course Objective

After finishing this course, the student:has knowledge of and insight into the theology of Calvin and the specifics of this theology; is able to apply this analytical insight, so that he/she is able to relate the specifics of Calvin's theology to (pre)modern and postmodern theological approaches; has the ability to communicate this knowledge and insight; is able to do independently research of Calvin's theology.

Course Content

On the basis of the Institution of Calvin, fundamental Reformation theology is discussed. The broad outline of his Institution is discussed, as well as the theological decisions it makes. We talk about characteristic Reformation cores such as the knowledge of God, the relationship between Word and Spirit, the spiritual nature of salvation, faith and justification, and so on. In order to bring out the specifics of the Reformation, lines are drawn to contemporary theological practice.

Teaching Methods

Interactive work lectures. Because of the interactive form of the lectures, attendance of the classes is necessary.

Method of Assessment

Written exam which determines 100% of the result. (Note, if it is impossible to have a physical exam, we use a take-home exam)
