METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION

1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data:
Contact was sought with organizers from public meetings in the Netherlands (mostly in the southern part, such as in the province of Limburg and Noord-Brabant). We told them about our research, and asked them whether we could make recordings of the meeting. If the organizers gave their consent, we travelled to the place where the meeting was held. Prior to the meeting (on camera or on audio) we told everyone in the room who we were, what research we were conducting and the exact reasons for making the recordings. We thereby asked the attendants for their permission to make the recordings, and to use them for academic purposes (scientific articles and presentations) and for educational purposes in the form of a dialogue training for professionals. We thereby also mentioned that the attendants could decline participating in the research at any time, also after the meeting, without giving any reasons for why they do not want to participate in the study.

2. Methods for processing the data:
The video and audio recordings of public meetings constitute the raw data. We used conversation analysis (see Sidnell & Stivers, 2013) in analyzing these data. We made transcripts of (parts of) these meetings, using Jefferson's (2004) transcription system that includes all kinds of details of talk, such as laughter, overlap in talk, pauses, hesitations, or embodied features. In the transcripts, information that could lead to the identification of participants (e.g., location names, personal names), was removed and replaced by pseudonyms. We used the software Audacity for this transcription process. We searched the recordings and transcripts for interesting interactional phenomena, such as the ways questions are being asked and answered in these meetings. Such an approach sheds light on how people engage with each other through interaction, without being necessarily aware of this. Of these phenomena or patterns, collections were made. We adopted an iterative analytical procedure, which entailed multiple rounds of analysis where individual instances were examined, also in view of their common features.
