Aat Liefbroer (1958) is endowed professor of Demography of Young Adulthood and Intergenerational Transmission at the Department of Sociology. He also is Theme Leader Families & Generations at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI-KNAW) and professor of Life Course Demography at the Department of Epidemiology of the University Medical Centre Groningen, University of Groningen.
Liefbroer currently is National Coordinator of the European Social Survey (ESS), responsible for waves 10 and 11. Liefbroer also is National Coordinator of the Gender and Generations Programme (GGP).
Liefbroer's research focusses on demographic choices in young adults' lives. He examines differences in the occurrence and timing of events like leaving home, cohabitation, marriage, parenthood and union dissolution, both within the Netherlands and across Europe. He looks at determinants of these processes, e.g. whether they differ between social classes and between young adults who experienced family disruption during youth and those who did not. He also looks at consequences of these processes for a variety of outcomes, like health, social well-being and economic well-being.
