Personal information

Andreas Wiese is an associate professor in the Operations Analytics group at VU Amsterdam. He obtained his PhD in 2011 from the Technical University Berlin (TU Berlin) and was a postdoc at the TU Berlin, at the Sapienza University of Rome and at the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken. After that, he was a professor at the Universidad de Chile, until he finally joined VU.


In his research, he is interested in 

  • Combinatorial optimization
  • Approximation algorithms
  • Packing problems
  • Geometric problems
  • Scheduling


In the past, he taught several courses on undergraduate and graduate level on topics like 

  • Linear optimization
  • Operations research
  • Approximation algorithms
  • FPT algorithms
  • Online algorithms
  • Theory of machine learning

Prizes and Awards

He obtained an Emmy Noether grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and two Fondecyt Regular grants from CONICYT, the Chilean "National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research".
