Anna is a PhD candidate at the Athena Institute of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She holds a BA and RMA in History from the University of Amsterdam. In her research project she focuses on Dutch agricultural history in relation to environmental issues (1950-2000). Specifically, the project is centered around Dutch discourses on environmental issues concerned with the rising role of agricultural industries, such as the increasing use of pesticides and the import and consumption of animal feed produced in Thailand and South America. Therefore the role of various actors, for example, farmers, governmental politics, environmental organisations, and agribusiness will be analysed. With that, the project not only tries to add a different perspective on farming in a context of political and societal change, globalisation and European integration, it also aims to contribute to our understanding of a past that is so much intertwined with the future of our food system.
Broader interests include: political and social history, memory culture, agricultural history, transdisciplinary research and environmental history.
