Annemarie Middelburg is an independent consultant, researcher, and expert in international law and women’s rights, with a focus on gender-based violence, particularly Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C). She supervises students in the Master's programme International Crimes, Conflict and Criminology

Her research interests lie at the intersection of gender, human rights law, and migration, exploring the legal, social, and cultural dimensions of gender-based violence.

Annemarie holds an LLM in International Public Law & Human Rights (cum laude) and wrote her PhD thesis at Tilburg University. She is the founder and director of Right to Rise, an independent consultancy firm specialized in gender-based violence.

She has worked on various research projects related to the implementation of international human rights treaties, and her expertise has been sought by organizations such as the United Nations, consultancy firms, universities, governments as well as various international and local NGOs. 

Her work spans over 25 African countries, where she engages with local and international stakeholders to raise awareness, drive action, and develop tailored strategies to enhance the rights of girls and women.

In addition, Annemarie has served on several advisory boards and governance bodies, for example for Pax Christi and Hope for Girls & Women in Tanzania. She is currently the chair of the Supervisory Board of VSO Netherlands.
